To get your content indexed by AI search engines faster, make sure their crawlers can reach the page, then tell the search indexes they rely on that the page exists: list it in an up-to-date XML sitemap, notify Bing and other engines through IndexNow, submit it in Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools, link to it from pages AI already cites, and add it to your llms.txt. The seven steps below take less than an hour for a new page.

How AI search engines find new content

AI assistants find pages in three ways. They use their own crawlers (for example OAI-SearchBot, Claude-SearchBot and PerplexityBot) to build a search index. They rely on traditional search indexes: Microsoft Copilot is built on Bing, and Gemini on Google. And when a user asks a question, some fetch pages live (ChatGPT-User, Claude-User, Perplexity-User). Getting indexed quickly means being easy to find in all three: crawlable, listed and linked.

7 steps to get indexed faster

1. Make sure the page can be crawled

The page must return HTTP 200, be allowed in robots.txt for the AI crawlers you want, not be blocked by your CDN or firewall, and have its content in the HTML rather than loaded by JavaScript. If a crawler cannot read the page, nothing else on this list helps.

2. Add it to your XML sitemap with an honest date

Add the new URL to a sitemap listed in robots.txt, with a last-modified date that reflects a real change. Keep sitemaps free of redirects and missing pages so crawlers trust them.

3. Notify search engines with IndexNow

IndexNow sends the URL straight to Bing and other participating engines the moment you publish. Host your key file on the site, then submit the URL list; a 200 response means it was accepted. Bing powers Microsoft Copilot, so this is one of the quickest routes into an AI assistant.

4. Submit in Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools

Google does not use IndexNow. Resubmit your sitemap and use URL inspection to request indexing for important pages. Bing Webmaster Tools also shows which of your pages are cited in AI answers.

5. Link to it from pages AI already cites

Crawlers revisit pages that are already popular. A link from your most-cited guide to the new page gets it discovered sooner than a link from a page nobody visits. Your AI citation reports show which pages those are.

6. Add it to llms.txt

List the page with a one-line description in your llms.txt so AI tools that read the file know it exists and what it covers.

7. Write it so it can be quoted

Indexing gets the page seen; citation needs a clear answer. Answer the main question in the first paragraph, use descriptive headings, add FAQ structured data where there are questions, and keep facts consistent with the rest of your site.

How to check it worked

Look at your server or CDN logs for visits from AI crawlers to the new URL. In Bing Webmaster Tools, the URL inspection and AI performance reports show when a page is indexed and when it starts being cited. Allow a few days for crawling, and longer for citations to appear in AI answers. When we updated ultrascout.ai in October 2026, we submitted the 584 changed pages through IndexNow the same day the update went live.

Check your page before you submit it

Before submitting, run the page through CiteTrust™. The free check confirms AI crawlers can access it and flags missing schema, meta tags or llms.txt in about 10 seconds. The Pro report (£19 per URL) gives the full 40-point audit with prioritised fixes, and the Fix Pack (£49) gives you the implementation fixes.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take for AI search engines to index a new page?

With IndexNow and a sitemap, Bing often crawls a page within days. Appearing in AI answers takes longer, because the assistant also has to judge the page useful for a question. There is no fixed time, which is why it is worth measuring.

Does IndexNow work for Google?

No. Google does not use IndexNow. Use Google Search Console to submit sitemaps and request indexing.

Can I submit my content directly to ChatGPT?

There is no submission form for ChatGPT. Make sure OpenAI's search crawlers are allowed, keep your sitemap current, and make the page easy to find through search indexes and links.

Why is my page indexed but not cited in AI answers?

Indexing means the page is known; citation means it is the best answer. Check that the page answers the question directly in its first paragraph, has valid structured data, and that your facts match across your site. A CiteTrust™ report shows the technical gaps.
